Bangor: the city in which I have been working for 3 months, the city which I used as base camp for all my trips.
I would like to clarify: this is a university city, and living here in summer could be a bit monotonous, but don't worry: you have an entire island, Anglesey, to explore. If you're looking for fun, thousands of pubs and bars and disco, this is not your place. If you're reading this probably you're a university student, so I'll try to give you some tips.
Nothing. Joking, but there's not much to do in term of attraction. The city museum worth a visit, it's free and worth a Saturday morning visit. A stroll on the High Street, the longest in Wales, is a must do,, furthermore if you are looking for some shopping. H&M (just for women), Peacock, New Look, are just some of them; there's Debenhams, both Poundland and 1£ World, WHSmith and WHS stationery. The Deiniol shopping center has not that much to offer: Iceland, a jewelry, a minigolf pitch (just on Saturday), a charity shop and little more. Charity shops: I have been in at least 6 of them. You can find books, kitchen stuff, clothes, and so on. Sometimes you can catch the bargain. One of the shop I like the most is Relics, a big indoor market with second hand items. Have a look and you'll not be disappointed. There are two music shops, one close to Deiniol shopping center and the other on Holyhead Road in front of Belle Vue.
What you must do is a walk on the pier - I warn you, could be so windy. But it's peaceful, at least in Summer. Here I invite you to try the Whistlestop, a little kiosk run by Terry, who cooks mouth watering pancakes. Otherwise, have a hot cup of tea on the tea room at the end!
For the shopping, you have no reasons to worry: it's plenty of supermarkets! Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, M&S, Lidl, all in a central position; Tesco's open 24h/24 but it's further, on the Caernarfon road. There are many mini-markets (one open 24h a day close to Morrisons, in front of Greek Taverna) and eastern shops.
If you like sport, and you are a student, you can exploit the annual ticket of the university gym which costs about 100£, but during the academic year can be very crowded. There's an athletic track close to the Treborth botanical garden, another place where I suggest you to have a look.
Here a video of Bangor Pier shot by a friend of mine, I'm sure you'll like it.
Well, I must say I didn't try a lot of places. The first of the list is Torna a Surriento, an Italian restaurant in High Street. You may think I'm Italian doing advertisement, but it's not true: it's very, very good. Family from Naples and sicilian waiter: nothing more about Italian cuisine could have landed to Bangor. Give it a try. Other place? The Black Bull is not bad and you have some meal deal; if you have to eat late, go to Belle Vue where the kitchen is open till 11.
I'll update this page as I did a lot of things, I can't remember all of them now! Enjoy your stay! :)
